Syllabus: How Does Substance Use Become Persistent Despite Harm?
Evaluate the critique of the preceding habit experiment alongside the positive evidence for goal-directed choice under negative affect.
Why you’re reading it. Compare rival explanations using their strongest discriminating tests.
A question to consider. Name a pattern both theories could explain, then modify the comparison so that their predictions diverge.
Why this reading
Persistent harmful behavior need not be indifferent to outcomes. Hogarth argues that negative emotional states can increase the expected value of a drug relative to competing goals. The review challenges habit and compulsion accounts by scrutinizing the experiments used to distinguish them.
Before you read
Negative affect includes distressing emotional states. A goal-directed action can be harmful and conflict with longer-term goals; the term does not mean wise or unconstrained. A mediation model describes an indirect statistical relationship, whose causal interpretation needs additional assumptions.
Read for
- Compare the definitions and test procedures in Box 1. Could different theories predict the same observed persistence?
- Follow the alternative interpretation of devaluation failures in terms of task knowledge and engagement.
- Separate experimentally induced mood effects from associations involving coping motives, psychiatric symptoms and dependence.
Consider afterwards
- Specify an observation that would count against the claim that negative affect increases drug seeking through expected value.
- How could you distinguish a highly valued outcome from insensitivity to its costs?
Editorial context
The title states the author’s conclusion from a selective translational review. The strength of evidence differs across species and procedures, and theories do not always use “compulsion” in the same way. The paper itself notes that much of the coping-motive mediation evidence is cross-sectional. A demonstrated capacity to respond to consequences does not establish that change is easy or that all people face comparable alternatives.
