Syllabus: How Can We Study Experience and Meaning?
Use fidelity and utility to revisit the stimming and protest studies. The relevant issue is what a proposed procedure would contribute to each inquiry.
Why you’re reading it. Challenge interpretations through standards that fit their aims, while keeping their scope explicit.
A question to consider. For one case, propose a useful challenge to the interpretation and explain why a generic demand for a larger sample or coder agreement would not answer the same question.
Why this reading
A procedure can be useful in one study and inappropriate in another. This task-force paper offers a way to evaluate qualitative research through the relationship between its aims, assumptions, material and methods.
Before you read
Fidelity concerns how the inquiry engages its subject matter. Utility concerns how well its methods answer the research question. Reflexivity examines how researchers’ perspectives and relationships shape the work; it is more than listing personal characteristics.
Read for
- Apply the flowchart to sampling, interpretation and the treatment of differences within the findings.
- Examine why participant feedback or agreement between analysts has different purposes across approaches.
Consider afterwards
- A reviewer demands a larger sample and agreement between coders. What information about the study would determine whether either request improves it?
Editorial context
The recommendations require reasoned judgment rather than fixed thresholds or a universal checklist. They do not empirically establish that one qualitative tradition is superior. Clear reporting helps evaluation but cannot compensate for inadequate material or an unsupported interpretation.
