Reading focus
Syllabus: How Can Effective Psychological Care Reach More People?
Specify the stakeholder, practice and time point behind each proposed implementation outcome.
Why you’re reading it. Distinguish delivering an intervention successfully from establishing its health benefit.
A question to consider. A service reports high staff satisfaction and more referrals. Which implementation and clinical outcomes are still missing?
Why this reading
A beneficial intervention and a workable implementation strategy answer different questions. Proctor and colleagues supply a vocabulary for examining whether a service can adopt and sustain a practice.
Before you read
Implementation outcomes concern introducing and maintaining a practice. Service outcomes concern care quality; clinical outcomes concern people’s health. These can be related without being interchangeable.
Read for
- Distinguish acceptability, appropriateness and feasibility rather than treating approval as proof a programme can be delivered.
- For each proposed outcome, specify whose perspective, which practice and what time point are being measured.
Consider afterwards
- A clinic adopts a programme that staff value but cannot maintain after funding ends. Which outcomes differ?
- What evidence would connect improved implementation with better patient outcomes?
Editorial context
The eight-outcome taxonomy emerged from a narrative review and working-group deliberation. It is a conceptual proposal and research agenda, not a demonstration that all proposed pathways hold. A 2023 scoping review found that tests linking implementation strategies, implementation outcomes and health outcomes remained limited.
